The Local Pack (the 3 map listings Google shows) concentrates most clicks from high-intent local searches. Ranking there is not magic: it is based on signals you can measure and improve.
l. What the Local Pack is
It is the results block with a map and 3 businesses Google shows for local searches ("restaurant near me", "lawyer near me"). It captures most clicks: appearing in the top 3 multiplies visits and calls.
f. Main local ranking factors
- Proximity: the distance between the searcher and your business
- Relevance: how well your profile matches the search (category, keywords, services)
- Prominence: mentions, links, authority and, above all, reviews
- Consistency: identical name, address and phone across the web
- Behavior: clicks, calls, routes and time on the profile
r. The role of reviews
- Quantity: more reviews = stronger prominence signal. The practical threshold is above your sector's average
- Velocity: a constant flow of reviews (not spikes) signals real activity. Google penalizes artificial spikes
- Average rating: important but not everything: a 4.5 with 200 reviews usually beats a 5.0 with 20
- Diversity: recent, varied reviews (not all on the same day or from the same customer type)
- Responses: replying to reviews signals active management and improves perception
- Ratio: a healthy positive/negative split (over 80% positive)
d. Data and studies
- Businesses with more than 50 reviews are much more likely to appear in the Local Pack than those with few
- The jump from 3.8 to 4.2 in average rating is associated with significant booking increases in hospitality
- Constant velocity (3-8 reviews per month) correlates better with top positions than one-off spikes
- Responding to 100% of reviews is associated with better rankings and higher consumer trust
